Opening Day Goose Season

The opening day of goose season in our new pit blind in Chestertown. Saturday November 15, weather, pouring down rain as we are putting our decoys out. We get a the last few out and park the cars and the rain stops. We get into the blind which was filled with trash, beer cans, coke bottles, last January's blue plate special, and a years worth of spent shells. Anyway the blind is long can definitely fit 8 comfortably although it is a little short. When Richard stands up his whole upper torso is going to stick out. I will have to say there is no lack of geese where we are. I'm not kidding when I say there were 5-10 thousand birds that we saw. And to think we could not pull one damn bird into our spread. What could it have been? The 2 other blinds nearby had no problem getting birds. Here is my thoughts for what we did wrong. I did not think we brushed the blind adequately the blind has some corn stalks on it but it is in a bean field so that could have been a problem. Our blind was facing into the wind so maybe when they were flying over the blind they did not like what they saw. The other blinds were facing away from the wind so the birds were flying right into them. We only had 3 birds that we could have shot at. Greg had the closest shot, but he bought the wrong shells for his gun and it did not fire. Oh well there are plenty more weekends for us to figure it out. One more week till WV firearms season. As of right now the weather is looking great.

Make sure if you want a firearm in the near future you buy it before January 20th.  

Driving to work

So my commute to work is an interesting one.  I go into two different worlds city to country in less than 20 minutes.  So I get on I70 (at the start of it right near the Park and Ride) I am going to route 29 which is 3 miles west once i am on 29.  Today there was a lot of traffic and there is a field where the power lines run through.  There are always deer in there.  I am looking for the buck that rules the herd.   I see 4 or 5 does every morning but never the big buck. I was told that there is a decent one in there but i have never seen him.  When I am on route 40 there are always geese flying, where to one can only Imagine.  Coming up to the Enchanted Forest there is a pipe line clearing where occasionally there are deer in there, most likely the ones that we saw on the camera at Rich's house.   Finally the backstretch into farm country of Howard County.  Geese Geese Geese Deer Deer Geese Doves Ducks.  Western Howard county is filled with all kinds of game.  It's a shame there are only pockets of places that you can hunt.  No wonder there are so many deer being hit by cars.  In September I was first on the seen at night to a car hitting deer :(  An 18 and 3/4  inch 8 pointer still in velvet.  Its sad that a deer like that had to go that way, but good for my wall... I guess.  My drive to and from work everyday makes the days go by that much faster until i can get out on Saturdays during the fall/winter

Saturday 10.25 Mckee Beshers

Two of us head down to Mckee Beshers again for the last day of the first split.  Weather warm and rainy.  Friday night was cold so I was assuming Saturday morning was going to be cold as well so I put on my Cold gear underarmour and walked out the door.  I was hit with a humid mid to high 50's temperature.  We got to where we go in by 530 and were on our way.  As we were hiking in looking for the rock we always stop at to put our waders on we came to a creek that we have never seen before so we were a little miffed that we took a wrong turn somewhere.  So 45 minutes of hiking trying to find our rock, wearing coldgear underarmour that still had the barbs the the beggars ticks from last week, and the shell to my duck jacket made for hot uncomfortable hunt.  So we get to the place we are going to hunt at put to wood duck decoys out in the beaver pond we have about 2 minutes before legal shooting time.  It is now shooting time, normally at this time there are shotguns a blazing, there should be shooting going on all around us, on the river but there is nothing.  Brian turns to me and says "Did we miss a sign somewhere saying this place is closed or something?"  Needless to say in a few more minutes we heard a few volleys not far away but still no ducks for us.  We only saw around a dozen birds heard no more that 10 shots and 1 muzzleloader shot.  By 9am we were on our way out back to the car a dissapointing day.  Oh well on to cheer on Maryland.

Opening Day Duck Season 10.18.08

A few of us went down to Mckee Beshers for the opening day of the 1st split of duck season.  The weather was good around 50 degrees in the morning partly sunny.  There wasn't that much water in there like 2 years ago but there was more water than last year.  The first 2 woodies I saw were right at shooting time I was tracking them and went to pull the trigger and the safety was on.  I was mad cause I wondered to myself what if that was the only shooting opportunity I would have.  Oh well anyway I shot about 20 times and only came up with 1 bird.  Maybe some preseason shooting would have helped.  So after an hour of trying to find my bird Rob finally found it.  We were all covered in "Beggars Ticks" which are little hitchhiker burr things that are impossible to get out.  If anybody has any information on how to get these things out I would greatly appreciate it.
